Background

Life in Garlemald

Lucas is a pureblood Garlean who was born in Garlemald to a middle class family. From a young age, he showed a predisposition toward medicine, playing chirurgeon, patching up friends’ wounds on the playground. In his teen years, he ended up being enlisted in the military to become a field medic.During the course of his medical training he met a particular scientist who was looking for some young “research assistants” for a project he was working on. Little did he know that the role of “assistant” would actually entail Lucas becoming one of the guinea pig experiments in his earlier studies trying to imbue aetherical abilities into pure-blooded Garleans. However, these early experiments seemed to be mostly “failed” and were discontinued when he no longer had funding.

The Calamity

During the Battle of Carteneau, Lucas was sent out on the field, still quite fresh in his training. Having been traumatized from the human experiments and overall disillusioned by the general state of the Empire, Lucas managed to escape amongst the destruction caused by the Calamity. By some stroke of luck, he was found by a kind Sharlayan chirurgeon named Florian Soleiraux, who took pity on him and took him under their care.Upon hearing of Lucas’s struggles, Florian offered to help with Lucas’s transition in exchange for having Lucas as apprentice under them as a way to repay for the expenses. Lucas gratefully accepted the offer, having really nowhere else to go, and underwent masculinizing (top) surgery and therapy to help change his appearance. Florian also helped him get official documents for his new identity and Luc was officially registered in Sharlayan as Lucas Ceruleus, apprentice chirurgeon.

Newfound Magicks

As a Garlean, Lucas was not born with the innate ability to manipulate aether. However, due to his participation in the dubious experiments to give pure-blooded Garleans aetherical ability, his body’s aetheric balance was greatly disrupted.For a while afterward, he would have bouts of aetheric instability, manifesting as diffuse pain, headaches and dizziness. Much of this he tried to hide, but it did not escape Florian’s notice, and they insisted on looking into methods of stabilizing Lucas’s aether to control these episodes.This is initially managed by giving Lucas the soul crystal of a Sage, so that he could find a way to channel that energy. It took a while for him to get the hang of it, but with a few little tweaks to the nouliths and the help of the soul crystal, he has been able to perform some weak magic through somanautics.

Alternate Timelines

Wyrmblood: At around the time of Heavensward, Lucas joined the Scions in Ishgard to help tend to the wounded in the midst of war and turmoil. In the process, he became close with the Azure Dragoon Estinien, who, through a series of unfortunate events, became merged with the Great Wyrm Nidhogg. Upon learning of Lucas's aetherical instability, Estinien sought to find a solution and ended up begrudgingly accepting Nidhogg's assistance, channeling his draconic magicks into a dragon scale ward for Lucas. Initially, it seemed to stabilize him, but over time they realized there's much more to the magicks than the Great Wyrm had initially divulged...Dog Days: In between work while living in Sharlayan, Lucas will often hang out with Kyle, whether it's for research or friendly shenanigans. One of the little experiments Kyle was tinkering with included a new form of fantasia. As his willing test subject, Lucas tried it out and ended up sprouting a pair of floppy ears and fluffy tail reminiscent of a puppy. Neither of them are sure whether the effects are permanent, but if it takes a while to wear off, it wouldn't be all that bad...
